![]() 22 cores probably means you have 18 idle cores, even if the transcode isn't keeping up (which you can check easy enough by looking at your CPU/core utilization while a transcode is happening). It's kinda of like gaming that way, you get the best results from the highest individual core performance you get. Generally, you will probably only see benefit for any given encode of 3-4 cores, with (probably greatly) diminishing returns, if any, beyond that. It's not a Plex specific limitation, modern lossy video encoding doesn't lend itself to massive parallelization for the most part. There's a lot of factors here.īut I have plenty to throw at it. ![]() Are you sure that you have enough power in your server to transcode whatever it is you are playing? Working fine in the past might not be an indicator either, if you changed something else, like started using higher resolution source content, or different encoding (i.e. You didn't mention what hardware your Plex server is on. You would have to have PlexPass and enable hardware transcoding for that to be in effect, so you'd probably know if you were using that. The default transcode option is 'automatic', but you could try setting it to fastest, just to see if that results in something different as far as playback is concerned. Like, from a desktop client or browser, set your option to like 720P or 8Mbit 1080, and play something that isn't either of those, and a transcode should happen. You just need to have your client playback settings be such that it can't do a Direct Stream in those conditions, or even disable Direct Stream on the client side. If they already are enabled, post the media info for the file (Video codec, audio codec, container, bitrate). Go to your settings on your PS4 app and make sure "Allow Direct Stream" and "Allow Direct Play" are both enabled. If you're saying that you've played the same media on a flash drive plugged into the PS4 - it shouldn't be transcoding because that sounds like it should be able to play it. So assuming that's the case, and the PS4 client is your main client, you should try to make sure your media is in a format it can play natively. If you look around, you will see lots of complaints about the PS4.īut, I used it for a while because it was still my best option, so maybe that's your case too. Mine used to crash all the time, haven't used it in a year or so, so not sure if it's significantly better. In my experience the PS4 client is buggy. If it happens anytime, it might be easier to reproduce the error and find the logs. I will see if I can find the logs that correspond to the time the error happened last night.
